Year 10 boys experiment with old ink cartridges to add bright colours to their work
A fabulous start to a new project. Ben Davies, Tai Shirley and James Benfield made exciting mixed media pieces using collage materials and an old ink cartridge.
Alison, a member of the Brunel Broderers group who recently exhibited in the Curious Drawers exhibition in the Curve, worked with different groups of pupils on various textiles activities.
Holes were drilled into the top and sides of a wooden chest of drawers. Fabric strips cut into ribbons and wools were then hand stitched into the piece of furniture. This was a very experimental, large scale piece showing the structural potential of hand stitches.
Year 13 Textiles students Alice Capener, Bethan Collingham, Laura Clark, Victoria George and Sarah Sahebgharani were able to interview Alison Harper to help them develop their Personal Investigation essays for A-level. They were given a tour of the Curious Drawers exhibition and introduced to the background information behind the pieces on display. The students were also able to participate in a workshop making twisted and wrapped threads.
Last week, the artists came into to school to work with the boys. They each worked with a group of 8 boys for 10 lessons. The boys involved are: Kefren Brennan, Matt Christmas, Charlie Cresswell, Liam Davies, Kyle Dokic, Callio Hiam, Tony Jones, Charlie Light, Joshua Moss, Matthew Say, Adam Shotbolt, Martel Sutherland, Ben Tarrant, Michael Thompson, Matt Virgoe and Jake White.
Using small LED lights, they worked in the dark to create drawings with light.
They then worked in smaller groups to create stop-motion animations.
They also created some stop-motion animations and they filmed themselves against the green screen so they could appear in their animations.
The Chosen Ones is a project especially for KS3 boys to engage them in school through art. Outside funding allowed the school to bring in two artists to work with the boys in some workshops which will result in an exhibition in the Curve Gallery. The boys were central to the selection of the artists. They helped write the advert and then interviewed the artists. The chosen artists were Ulf Pedersen and Davy McGuire.
