On Wednesday 3 February, fifteen AS and A-level Art/Textiles students equipped with cameras and notebooks visited this exciting exhibition of war time textiles, held at the Museum at the Park in Stroud.   The entrance to the show was like going down Alice in Wonderland’s rabbit hole as students walked through the vents of a giant red coat.

Inside the students were confronted with a giant dress made from a parachute and other pieces of art-textiles made from recycled clothes and materials.  Students were encouraged to enjoy using the equipment available: some tried their hand at weaving, others tried to operate a spinning wheel and others made soft heart-shaped brooches to go on a large hanging.

This exhibition introduced the concept of recycling, repairing and renewing an item, quite unnatural in the ‘throw-away’ attitude which developed in the twentieth century.

A great visit, which has proved very useful in preparation for the examination the students are now doing.

There were five successful workshops for children on Saturday.  Artist Celia Smith took her first session with us, she introduced her group to working with wire and made 2d birds.  A student who worked with Miss Bunting in the wax resist collage group enjoyed it as ’we got to get really messy and do art on a bigger scale’.

Mrs Belinfante and Mr Upward led a fun session combining maths and art for our Yr 11 as an extension to their normal learning.  They enjoyed learning how to use bearings incorporating a focus on art coursework.  Mr Upward said ‘it was nice to relax with the students’.  Miss Dryland took some Yr 10 art students through making a final piece for their current project.

Artist John Ring led a very successful adult drawing workshop where an attendee said that it was great to ‘meet new people and learn a new skill’ and another said they had ‘tried something new and enjoyed a break from the usual Saturday morning routine’.

Please feel free to visit the fantastic exhibition of work by printmaker Greg Poole.  Greg will be taking a series of workshops over the next fortnight for students in Year 7 and Year 8. The work on show is achieved using monoprinting and linoprint techniques.

Originally a zoologist, Greg discovered the need to express himself through artwork whilst surveying breeding birds on the Arctic tundra.  His prints are bold, colourful and stylish, celebrating his love of the natural world.  Greg has exhibited at several galleries including Nature in Art and we are delighted to host this exhibition.
